Haebangchon

FILM SYNOPSIS

Han Yoon, a Korean international student, returns to Seoul's Haebangchon district after leaving college in the United States due to severe depression. Concealing her struggles from her father, she seeks refuge in this neighborhood, originally formed by North Korean defectors during the Korean War but now a vibrant enclave for foreigners in Korea. For Yoon, Haebangchon is a liminal space: simultaneously a source of comfort and a haunting reminder of the tragic Itaewon Halloween Crowd Crush, where she lost friends. As she grapples with her past and present, Yoon faces the uncertain question of where her journey will lead beyond Haebangchon.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

This short film ‘Haebangchon’ is deeply personal to me, stemming from my own battle with severe depression during my transition from Korea to college in the US. It was always difficult to discuss my mental health struggles openly. After coming off medication last summer, I found the courage to share my story. Creating this film felt like closing the chapter on my depression journey. I hope it brings solace to those struggling and fosters empathy. Morover, dedicated to those affected by the Itaewon Halloween Crowd Crush near Haebangchon, this film honors those lost and reflects on their impact.
